They're better off not hiring a good candidate than hiring one that has a negative impact. Since I was just a student, the interview is pretty much all the information about my skills they have so I can't be surprised they didn't take me after that less than average interview. If you had had a job offer it would've been for "Software Engineer" and then they would've found a position for you based on your skills, preferences and need inside the company.
